Photographing the Arizona Monsoon
August 9 – 13, 2026
Florence, Arizona
Have you always wanted to photograph the Arizona Monsoon? It may seem easy, but capturing truly dynamic images requires a deep understanding of the landscape, weather patterns, and how to combine them with visually compelling locations that tell a story.
Join renowned photographer Ken Sklute for an immersive workshop designed to help you do exactly that.
With over 30 years of experience photographing dramatic lightning, Ken has created some of his most striking work in the target-rich environment of southeastern Arizona. During this workshop, he will share his proven methodology for selecting strong subjects, positioning yourself in the right place at the right time, and choosing the proper camera gear to capture powerful, unique images. You’ll also learn how to transform your captures into wall-ready art through professional post-processing techniques.
Throughout the workshop, you’ll photograph iconic desert subjects including towering saguaro cacti, sweeping desert landscapes, historic churches, and scenic Arizona missions—all set against the dramatic backdrop of monsoon storms.
Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just beginning your photographic journey, this workshop will help you grow your skills and come away with remarkable imagery.
Ken will guide you through key elements of successful storm photography, including:
Each day’s weather forecast will determine our shooting locations as we track and photograph developing storms. Activity may begin in the afternoon, build toward sunset, and sometimes extend into the night. Meals will be scheduled around our storm-chasing opportunities.
After each day in the field, we’ll return to the hotel where you’ll download your images and rest. Mornings will focus on post-processing and group critique sessions, helping you refine your vision and develop a stronger photographic eye.
Afternoons and evenings will be spent in the field—composing, observing, and capturing the dramatic beauty of the desert Southwest under monsoon skies.
The cost to attend this 5 day workshop in the beautiful Sonoran desert is $1,995.00 per person USD.
